Basilica. Peter in Avignon
Basilica. Peter in Avignon — one of the many famous churches. Them too much (this is the result of the fact that Avignon was the seat of a Bishop, and at one time — and the Pope), but the Basilica. Peter stands out even against this background. A wonderful example of Gothic architecture with well-preserved interior, it is located right behind the Palais des Papes.
The first building on this site was laid in the 7th century, but it was destroyed by the Saracens. Then a new Cathedral was built on the ruins of the old, and the main building that we see now, is in the middle of the 14th century. The Basilica greatly increased in size in the 15th and 16th centuries (the side chapels are mostly this time), several times rebuilt, but its wonderful Gothic forms are still preserved — this is a very beautiful Church. Inside the main building, built six side chapels of the 15th and 16th centuries created a very interesting and quirky decor. Preserved the altarpiece of Saint Peter, written in the 16th century, but the actual altar is fairly new — the old has moved to another Church. Also here you can see several paintings by artists of the 16th to 17th century and other rarities, the wooden carved choir stalls from the 16th century and some ancient graves. Particularly noteworthy are the doors: they have survived since the 16th century, made of walnut wood and decorated with stunning carvings, made two famous carvers.
Basilica. Peter in Avignon
A very interesting building. Unlike many other city churches, it has suffered relatively little during the great French revolution, it preserves paintings, carved wood, etc., so if you have limited time and can only look at some of the most interesting churches — you should choose this.
